This house was the last to be built on Orton Place. Sally E. Boughton sold the lot to Mary E. Upson on April 9, 1889 who then sold it to May E. Clark on July 18, 1889. Clark then built 11 Orton Place for immediate resale.
The home was probably designed by architect John G. Balsam, who designed other structures on St. John’s Place as well as homes for May Clark on Plymouth Avenue. This home has an interesting design because of its necessity of being built on an extremely narrow lot - the house itself is only 20 feet wide.
An 1890 edition of the Buffalo Address book and Family Directory lists Arthur C. Usher as living here, while a slightly later one lists George W. Howell, of John Howell and Son (manufacturer of carbonated beverages and mineral water) as the owner.
